In 1927, the Edward C. Bott family started Armor Metal Products in downtown Cincinnati. The company’s products were primarily steel workbenches, shop cabinets and tables. Steel was delivered to the building and each sheet was individually unloaded by hand and stored in the basement of the building.
In 1948, the Bott family moved the business to Beekman Street just 5 miles north of downtown. Armor continued to manufacture various industrial products with an employment base of 20-50 workers depending of the economy and demand.
During the 1970’s, Armor was purchased by LeBlond Machine Tool Company to assist in the fabrication of LeBlond lathes. LeBlond changed the company name to Armor Metal Fabrication. Business was strong as LeBlond lathes were a necessary tool for many machine shops. Beginning in the 1980’s LeBlond suffered from foreign competition and the LeBond family began selling ownership in the machine tool company to Makino. The LeBond name eventually changed to LeBlond Makino and then to just Makino as the Japanese company bought 100% ownership from the LeBlond family. Makino decided to exit the lathe business to focus on machining centers. Although Armor continued to fabricate various components for Makino, after the lathes business was gone, Armor became more of a job shop doing work for other OEM’s.
In 1996, Makino decided to exit the fabrication business to dedicate resources to their expanding machine tools business. Armor was put up for sale and sold to Kathy Schmitt 60% and David Schmitt 40%. Since 1996, Armor has purchased Williamson Metal Works- Madison Indiana, Beckwith Grinding- Hamilton, Ohio, Cincinnati Industrial Machinery- Cincinnati, Ohio, Armor Mobile Systems- Cincinnati, Ohio, AF Industries- Cincinnati, Ohio, Mokry Tesmer- Middletown, Ohio, PrimeSource MetalWorks- Cincinnati, Ohio, and Witt Industries, Cincinnati, Ohio.
With Armor’s acquisitions and growth, they now offer full service contract manufacturing along with their own product lines of waste and recycling receptacles, cleaning and finishing systems for the metal and food industries and specialty mobile medical vehicles. In 2000, Armor moved the Beekman Street operation to a newer and larger facility in Sharonville, Ohio. Our continued growth generated the need for an even larger facility, and in 2006, Armor moved it's Sharonville operation to a 307,000 square foot facility in Mason, Ohio.
Armor's growth has continued in 2010 with recent acquisitions, including George Manufacturing, Classic Manufacturing, and Victory Industrial Products, adding enclosed trailers, generator enclosures and sub-base fuel tanks to our list of products.
